What Is Christian Coaching? When to Choose Coaching or Therapy
What is Christian coaching, and when should you choose coaching or therapy? A compassionate guide for women seeking biblical support and clear next steps.
By Jane Perkins

What is Christian coaching, and when should you choose coaching or therapy? Christian life coaching for women gives you a place to bring a real-life question before God, look honestly at what is happening, and practice a response shaped by Scripture instead of simply reacting. A woman comes to me and says, “I know what Scripture says, but I need help living it out. Do I need coaching or therapy?”
And my first question back to her is usually, “What are you hoping we work on together?”
If she wants help understanding a pattern in her life, setting a boundary, or taking that next faithful step, coaching might serve her really well. If she needs treatment for symptoms that are affecting her ability to function day to day, then therapy deserves some serious consideration. And sometimes, honestly, we just need to talk a little more before we can even land on which one fits.
What is Christian coaching?
At Anchored Woman, coaching gives you a place to bring a real-life question before God, look honestly at what’s happening, and practice a response that is actually shaped by Scripture instead of just reacting.
Maybe you keep saying yes to people and then resenting it an hour later. You want to understand why you feel responsible for everybody else’s reaction, and you want to finally learn how to answer honestly instead of out of guilt. Or maybe you are facing a decision right now and you genuinely cannot tell if you are being wise and cautious, or if you are just avoiding the choice altogether because you are terrified of being wrong.
In coaching, we name that pattern together, look at what Scripture actually says about it, and work on a practical step for whatever situation is sitting in front of you. Coaching includes teaching, reflection, and follow-through. What it does not include is diagnosis or clinical treatment. I want you to know that up front.
What makes therapy different?
Therapy is a professional clinical service. A licensed counselor assesses what is going on, develops a treatment plan, and provides care for mental health struggles.
For example, a woman might be dealing with persistent intrusive thoughts, panic, or symptoms connected to trauma she has carried for years. She might need support that addresses how those struggles are affecting her sleep, relationships, work, or ability to function normally. Christian therapy can absolutely include prayer and Scripture alongside clinical assessment and treatment. Those two things are not in competition with each other.
I am a licensed counselor as well as a Christian coach. I value both of these callings, and I will never ask a woman to use coaching for a need that is really calling for therapy. That is not fair to her.
What about spiritual struggles?
Here is something I want you to really hear. A spiritual question does not automatically mean coaching is the right fit. And mental health symptoms do not mean your faith has failed you.
You might be asking, “Why do I keep agreeing to things God never asked me to carry?” Coaching may be a useful place to examine your beliefs and practice setting boundaries.
But you might be asking, “Why do these thoughts keep coming back, and why am I spending hours every day trying to make them stop?” That concern deserves a conversation with a qualified mental health professional. That is not something to work through alone or push past with willpower.
In either setting, you should be able to speak honestly about your faith. That should never be off the table. Proverbs 15:22 reminds us there is real value in seeking counsel. You do not have to sort out every piece of the decision by yourself before you are allowed to reach out for help.
Start with the support your situation calls for.
If you want biblical teaching and personal guidance for a current pattern or decision you are wrestling with, explore Christian coaching with Anchored Woman.
